Morton Family Gymnasium
Long before Thomas Morton made the donation that led to the Morton Family Gymnasium, his son, Brian, made his way onto the basketball court as a member of the 1979 freshman “B” basketball team. That experience launched a family love affair with Serra High School and Serra athletics. Trading his basketball shoes for golf clubs, Brian later became a key member of the Serra golf team. However, he became most famous as the original “Serra Padre” when he donned a brown Padre robe and led one of the most spirited rooting sections in school history.
Selected as “Joe Serra” in the senior poll, Brian embodied Serra spirit and loyalty. After graduating from Santa Clara University, where he continued his golf career, Brian joined the Serra Alumni Board. He also was the chairman of the Alumni Golf Tournament. Brian's involvement continued as a valued member of the Serra Board of Regents.
Brian and his wife, Dianne (father Richard Sullivan ‘52 and brother Tom ’81), are longtime Serra supporters. Their son, Scott Morton ‘08, continued the Padre tradition by wearing the brown robe and serving as the spirited Padre once again. It was the first father/son team to hold this special role. Scott became president of the Alumni Board in 2022. His brother, Brendan Morton '11, continued the family tradition by becoming a cheerleader and the third Morton to wear the Padre robe. Brendan also followed his father’s lead as a key member of the Serra golf team.
The Morton family has supported Serra financially and emotionally for more than four decades . . . which is why the Morton Family Gymnasium name is such a perfect fit.
