Sports Medicine
The Junípero Serra High School Sports Medicine Department is responsible for delivering high quality medical care to more than 700 Padre student-athletes in 14 athletic programs. The sports medicine team is composed of athletic trainers, physicians, and physical therapists who work cohesively to service the Serra student-athletes. We specialize in the prevention, management, treatment, and rehabilitation of athletic injuries using an evidence-based approach while adhering to the California Interscholastic Federation Sports Medicine Guidelines.
In addition to helping student-athletes achieve their athletic goals, we work to help our Padre community reach their professional career goals as well. Students interested in pursuing a career in health care can join the Sports Medicine Club (SMC) to gain firsthand experience in the world of sports medicine. Our Sports Medicine students assist our certified athletic trainers in the athletic training facility and on the sideline while gaining the opportunity to learn about the anatomy/physiology of injuries and the differing career paths in healthcare. Interested students should reach out to
Duke Meek or
Kevin Attard.
Role of the Athletic Trainer
Athletic Training is an allied health care profession that is recognized by the American Medical Association, Health Resources Service Administration, and the Department of Health and Human Services. Athletic trainers are required to complete a bachelor’s of science degree or a master’s degree with an accredited athletic training curriculum. There are 48 states and the District of Columbia that require athletic trainer’s to hold the credential of “Athletic Trainer Certified,” which is obtained by passing an exam administered by the Board of Certification.
Athletic trainers work under the direction of a physician and in correspondence with their education and state regulations. Athletic trainers are commonly confused with personal trainers, but there is a large difference in education and job duties. As a part of a healthcare team, athletic trainers provide emergent care, examination, clinical diagnosis, rehabilitation, prevention, and treatment of athletic injuries and medical conditions. Serra High School currently employs two full-time certified athletic trainers.
Concussion Information
All student-athletes participating in football, waterpolo, wrestling, soccer, basketball, lacrosse and baseball are required to go through a baseline concussion test every two years. The concussion testing assesses student-athletes' balance and neurocognitive abilities to aid in the evaluation and return to play process for our athletes who have sustained a suspected concussion. This testing is completed via the Sway Medical app and testing is completed on the student-athletes’ phone under the supervision of an athletic trainer. Serra High School abides by the California Interscholastic Federation by-laws in regard to management of student-athletes suspected of a concussion.
