Groundbreaking Ceremony for Serra’s New All-Weather Turf Field

Serra broke ground on a new, all-weather turf baseball field on June 27. This is a significant milestone made possible by the incredible generosity of supporters through our recent Always Forward capital campaign.

The new all-weather turf field is designed to provide athletes with a top-tier playing surface, allowing for extended play and practice time regardless of weather conditions. This advancement underscores our commitment to fostering athletic excellence and providing our student athletes with the best possible facilities to hone their skills while ensuring the highest standards of safety and performance.

"The project represents the culmination of an extensive two-year planning process driven by our vision to provide Serra students with outstanding academic and athletic facilities," said Serra President Barry Thornton, Ed.D.

According to head Varsity Coach Mat Keplinger, the facility upgrade is going to play an integral role in player development at all levels in the program.

"With the turf installation, we know that we are going to have field access year round, rain or shine. During the rainy season, all three levels will now be able to practice and play a full schedule," Keplinger said. "I can't tell you how excited I am for our players to have an opportunity to have access to train at a state-of-the-art complex paired with our current hitting facility. This is truly a game changer for Serra baseball!"

He added, "This is also testament to the Serra community and the commitment to continue to provide the best student-athlete experience possible. I want to give a huge thank you to Dr. Barry Thornton, Mike Fadelli, the Board of Regents, the Archdiocese, campaign supporters, and all those who played a role in turning this dream into a reality."

The new field will serve as a hub for our baseball teams, as well as a practice field for additional sports like soccer and lacrosse and summer recreational activities held on campus.

"The construction of this all-weather turf field represents a major enhancement for our baseball program," said Chief Advancement Officer Mike Fadelli '88. "We are incredibly grateful to those who have supported and believed in our shared vision. This project wouldn't have been possible without their generous contributions to the Always Forward capital campaign."
