Senior kicker Saul Marks tied his program record with a 53-yard field goal, and the No. 2-seed Padres (7-4) got back in the postseason win column with a 29-13 win over No. 7 Mitty (6-5) in the Central Coast Section Open Division football playoff opener Saturday at Freitas Field.
Marks converted three field goals on three attempts, and is now 11 of 15 on the season. Three of his field goals are over 50 yards, including a 52 yarder Oct. 4 against St. Ignatius, and a record-breaking 53 yarder Aug. 30 against Folsom.
Serra outgained Mitty 358-176 in total yards, with 291 of the Padres' yards coming on the ground. Junior Andrew Takapautolo totaled eight carries for a game-high 113 yards and one touchdown, while senior Iziah Singleton added 17 carries for 112 yards. Junior slot receiver Charlie Walsh scored two touchdowns, one on the ground, and another on a touchdown catch from freshman quarterback William Orr.
Mitty quarterback Joseph Engin was 10-of-22 passing for 199 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions, including an 82-yard scoring strike to senior Lucca Edwards. The Monarchs were held to minus-23 rushing yards.
Seniors Aidan Labrador and Brody Smith each had interceptions for the Padres. Junior Jeovanni Henley and freshman Taupaki Latu recorded one sack apiece.
With the win, Serra advances to the Open Division semifinal round to face No. 1 Riordan in a rematch of the Nov. 7 regular-season finale, which the Crusaders won 42-35. Friday's kickoff at San Jose City College is scheduled for 7 p.m.
