The Raiders had to make some brutal roster decisions on Tuesday afternoon as they cut their roster down from 91 to 53 players. Of course, the team is still in flux, as Pete Carroll and John Spytek know that this roster has work to do. Part of that process will be staying attentive on the waiver wire, scouring free agency and monitoring any potential trades that could benefit the Silver and Black. Another component of building the team is filling out a strong practice squad of players that can be elevated at a moment's notice.
The offensive line depth is questionable in Las Vegas, so keeping Mafi around will be pivotal. Plus, given that he had brief stints with the New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts over the last two years, he provides a little bit of experience for a young practice squad.

Las Vegas Riders guard Atonio Mafi has stood out in training camp. Let's take a closer look at Mafi:
Size:
6-3, 330 pounds.
NFL experience:|
Mafi spent the 2023 season with the New England Patriots. He played in all 17 games and started five games as a rookie. He didn't make the roster in 2024 and spent most of that season on the Indianapolis Colts' practice squad, but he did appear in three games as a backup. The Colts cut him in May. The Raiders signed Mafi just before training camp started.
College:
Mafi went to UCLA and was drafted by the Patriots in the fifth round in 2023.
Fun fact:
He went to Serra High School in San Mateo, California. The same school that produced Tom Brady, the Raiders minority owner.
How he will fit in with Raiders:
After joining the team as camp was starting, Mafi has made a fast impression. He has even worked with the first team some. He has some NFL experience. He has a real chance to make the 53-man roster and be a trusted backup.
